Company History

Wachtel Tree Science & Service, Inc. was founded in 1935 by C. L. (Larry) Wachtel. It is the oldest tree care company founded in Wisconsin, and in the 1940s and 1950s was the largest. Mr. Wachtel realized the importance of professionalism early on. He was president of the National Arborist Association, now The Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) in 1949, received the Distinguished Service Award from the Wisconsin Arborist Association (WAA), and was an Honorary Life Member of the WAA and the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). Larry Wachtel set standards in the tree care industry as a gentleman and a professional that we are all still working hard to sustain today.

Paul Markworth and Dave Scharfenberger purchased Wachtel Tree Science in 1994, doubling the operations twice in the first ten years. Paul and Dave are both past presidents of the WAA, both have received the Distinguished Service Award and are Honorary Life Members of the WAA. Dave also served on the ISA Board of Directors. Paul retired in 2012. Jeff Wilson joined as a partner in 2007. He has spent over 30 years working in the tree care industry and served on both the WAA and TCIA Board of Directors. Jeff has done everything from dragging brush and climbing, to managing a $25M region of a national tree care company.

On January 1, 2021, Ron Gumz & Ben Reince took over full ownership of the company. Both Ben and Ron joined Wachtel Tree Science in the early 2000s. When Dave and Jeff were planning to retire, they knew they wanted to keep the culture of Wachtel Tree Science intact. They did this by selling the company to Ron and Ben and keeping the ownership local.

Our employees set us apart. We strive to educate our team and have them credentialed as ISA Certified Arborists or Board Certified Master Arborists. We look to play active roles in the industry by being part of the Wisconsin Arborist Association (WAA). We stay active in the green industry by sustaining memberships in the WAA, Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA), International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association (WLCA), and American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA).

Safety and training are very important at Wachtel Tree Science. Every year we invest thousands of hours as a company to stayed trained in the latest technologies and industry trends.
